Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids; acquired cellular immunodeficiency; acquired immunodeficiency)


Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS; Acquired Cellular Immunodeficiency; Acquired Immunodeficiency)

General: Acquired breakdown of the immune system 111f57b followed by disease that takes advantage of the body's collapsed defenses; acquired by shared drug needles or sexual intercourse; occurs most frequently in homosexually active men (75%), intravenous drug abusers (13%), and Haitian immigrants (6%).

Ocular: Retinal cotton-wool spots; cytomegalovirus retinitis; retinal periphlebitis; conjunctival Kaposi sarcoma; necrotizing retinitis; retinal hemorrhages; conjunctivitis sicca; orbital Burkitt lymphoma; peripheral retinochoroiditis; vitreitis; fungal corneal ulcer; hypopyon; acute glaucoma; third nerve palsy; anterior uveitis; atypical retinitis; orbital pseudotumor; herpes zoster ophthalmicus; herpes simplex keratitis; bacterial keratitis; molluscum contagiosum; cytomegalovirus retinitis; toxoplasma retinitis; acute retinal necrosis; human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) retinitis; syphilitic retinitis; Pneumocystis carinii choroiditis; fungal and bacterial endophthalmitis; fungal choroiditis; conjunctival microvasculopathy; keratitis sicca; subconjunctival hemorrhage.

Clinical: Because of lowered immunity, one third develop Kaposi sarcoma; pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii; death.
